Diabetic Shoe Program
Diabetic Medicare patients are eligible for the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill, allowing access to specialized shoes and orthotics.
Therapeutic shoes are designed to accommodate custom-fitted diabetic insoles, as well as encourage a normal gait. The shoes are manufactured to be lightweight and prevent loosening (to remain securely on the foot).
People with diabetes are at an increased risk of serious foot disorders, and uncontrolled foot problems are the #1 cause of hospitalization. Approximately 25% of diabetics will develop foot problems.
Improper footwear can lead to sores or ulcers that can progress to an infection or possible amputation. Well-fitted diabetic shoes and moldable insoles have been shown to reduce the chance of these sores and ulcers.
Early prevention is the best way to avoid complications in the future, making therapeutic shoes and insoles a step in the right direction.
The doctors at Alpine Podiatry Center are here to help with your diabetic foot care needs. We are an integral part of your diabetic foot treatment, and we are dedicated to preventing the need for amputations with regular check-ups and the availability of diabetic shoes and inserts.
Medicare allows for one pair of shoes and three pairs of inserts per year, paying 80%. The remaining cost may be entirely covered by secondary insurance.
